Jidokwan FAQ
What is the correct name and spelling of Jidokwan?
Chosun Yunmoo Kwan Kong So Do Bu was the original name. That name was changed to Jidokwan during or shortly after the Korean War. Their is some confusion as to Ji Do Kwan, Chi Do Kwan, etc. However, they are all the same. Some incorrect history of Taekwondo was published a some years ago by over zealous persons wanting to be historians, but their information was extremely incorrect. Today, the correct name and English spelling is "Taekwondo Jidokwan". Like Taekwondo, Jidokwan is considered one word today.
Who is considered the founder of Jidokwan?
All of the original students of CHUN, Sang Sup consider him to be the founder.
Who is considered the main proponent of Jidokwan?
Chong Woo Lee.
Who is the current President of the Jidokwan?
Sung Wan Lee, a famous competitor during the 1960's and publisher of "Taekwondo News" in Korea.
Not often, but I have heard of some schools claiming to teach "Traditional Jidokwan". What is the difference between this style, and todays Taekwondo?
From the beginning of Jidokwan in 1940 until the merging of the Kwans into the Korean Taekwondo Association beginning in the late 1960's and finalizing in the mid 1970's, Jidokwan was in a constant state of researching and change. As a matter of fact, the TRADITION OF JIDOKWAN is CHANGE. Ultimately, the Jidokwan along with the other 8 Kwans, evolved into the Kukkiwon. As a matter of fact, the Kukkiwon Logo, and many of the concpets of Kukkiwon were the ideas of Jidokwan's greatest proponent, Grandmaster Chong Woo Lee.
A few practitioners are maybe practicing the Jidokwan curriculum from 1954, 1963, 1967, 1971, etc. They are practicing an early form of old Jidokwan curriculum that their teacher maybe have practiced. However, that does not make their practice "Traditional" as our tradition is one of new creation and that creation was a joint effort with other Kwans to create the Kukkiwon curriculum. Very few schools exist today that practice an early form of Jidokwan. The majority practice Kukkiwon Taekwondo. We are all brothers and sister though and equal respect should be given.
What is the current curriculum endorsed by Jidokwan?
Taekwondo Jidokwan endorses the Kukkiwon system 100%.
I would like to join and support the Jidokwan. Can I write the Headquarters and become a member?
The Jidokwan, like all Kwans disolved as martial arts systems back in the later 1970's. Today the Jidokwan mostly functions as a fraternal like, social friendship club. If you want to consider yourself a supporter of the Jidokwan, then you must follow the Jidokwan's idea, and that idea is to support the Kukkiwon and the WTF Member National Association in your nation. It is also very important to maintain a good relationship with your teacher and your seniors. If your teacher has Jidokwan roots, then talk to your teacher about this subject. Maintaining a good relationship with your teacher is the key to supporting Taekwondo and being true to the Jidokwan idea.
I want to earn a black belt certificate (Dan or Poom) from the Jidokwan, how do I go about this?
Again, this is a subject to discuss with your teacher. However it is important to know that the Jidokwan recommends and endorses the issuing of Kukkiwon dan and Poom certificate and suggest that all matters concerning Dan and Poom certificates be directed to the Kukkiwon. Again, to support the Kukkiwon is to support the Jidokwan, and all other Kwan's ideas. The most important issue though is to have a good relationship with your Sabumnim.
Can I get skip Dan or Poom?
Skip Dan is rare, but if allowed, it requires that fees for every Dan level be paid. Example: a person skiping from 1st to 4th would have to pay fees for 2nd, 3rd and 4th in one payment. Again, ask your instructor about this issue.
What else can I do to support the Jidokwan?
Speak Positive! Train hard and study. Act Positive! Pursue Kukkiwon Dan and attend the Kukkiwon Instructor Course. Contribute Positive! At some point, join the WTF Member National Association in your country and get involved. Concentrate on the Positive! Help others in your Dojang. Have Positive Awareness! Avoid negative ideas from negative people in Taekwondo. Make Positive Effort! Do your best. Think Positive! Live is to short to be an idiot! Have Positive Understanding! Work hard to have an understanding of yourself, and others.
